Spectral Element Methods for Transitional Flows in Complex Geometries
We describe the development and implementation of an efficient spectral element code for simulating transitional flows in complex three-dimensional domains. Critical to this effort is the use of geometrically nonconforming elements that allow localized refinement in regions of interest, coupled with a stabilized high-order time-split formulation of the semi-discrete Navier–Stokes equations. Sim...
متن کاملParallel Simulation of High Reynolds Number Vascular Flows
The simulation of turbulent vascular flows presents significant numerical challenges. Because such flows are only weakly turbulent (i.e., transitional), they lack an inertial subrange that is amenable to subgrid-scale (SGS) modeling required for large-eddy or Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations. The only reliable approach at present is to directly resolve all scales of motion. While the...
متن کاملTransitional cylindrical swirling flow in presence of a flat free surface
This article is devoted to the study of an incompressible viscous flow of a fluid partly enclosed in a cylindrical container with an open top surface and driven by the constant rotation of the bottom wall. Such type of flows belongs to a group of recirculating lid-driven cavity flows with geometrical axisymmetry and of the prescribed boundary conditions of Dirichlet type—no-slip on the cavity w...
متن کاملComparison of Turbulence Models for Simulating Flow in Waterjets
We have developed a fast numerical algorithm for simulating flows in complex moving domains. The new hybrid smoothed profile/spectral element method exhibits high-order accuracy as well as great computational efficiency as it removes the tyranny of mesh generation. Here we extend this work by incorporating a variational multiscale large eddy formulation for modeling the subgrid turbulent scales...
متن کاملVibration and Stability of Axially Moving Plates by Standard and Spectral Finite Element Methods
Based on classical plate theory, standard and spectral finite element methods are extended for vibration and dynamic stability of axially moving thin plates subjected to in-plane forces. The formulation of the standard method earned through Hamilton’s principle is independent of element type. But for solving numerical examples, an isoparametric quadrilateral element is developed using Lagrange ...
